Luis Garay, 301-649-5217
Excitement, energy, and inspiration are the soul of this class. There is plenty of opportunity for individual creativity and spontaneity enthusiastically provided by master instructor, Luis Garay. He helps his students to appreciate the passion and inspiration of the drum and to experience the joy of rhythm and the fun of creating music through Afro-Latin Rock, Jazz, and African World percussion; and, he always takes care to make each student feel comfortable and welcome. In this exciting class, everyone will get to play in the groove, progressing from basics to more sophisticated rhythms, and finally to ensemble literature as they learn to converse in the "universal language" of music. This class is open to all levels of adult students with a maximum of eight students per class. The ability to read music is desirable, but not required for enrollment. The class learns to play and improvise on a variety of percussion instruments including drum set, timbales, snare, congas, bongos, djembe, marimba, xylophone, and timpani. Each class is different and challenging and all music is especially composed and arranged by Luis Garay according to the abilities of the students. Each semester concludes with a spirited, high energy concert, showcasing the skills acquired by each class. Beginners welcome.
